PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)
A hormonal disorder common among women of reproductive age. People with PCOS may have infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods or excess male hormone (androgen) levels.
Key Symptoms:
- Irregular Periods: Infrequent, irregular, or prolonged cycles are the most common sign.
- Excess Androgen: May result in physical signs, such as excess facial and body hair (hirsutism), and occasionally severe acne.
- Polycystic Ovaries: Ovaries may develop numerous small collections of fluid (follicles) and fail to regularly release eggs.
Endometriosis
A painful disorder in which tissue similar to the tissue that normally lines the inside of your uterus — the endometrium — grows outside your uterus.
Key Symptoms:
- Painful Periods (Dysmenorrhea): Pelvic pain and cramping may begin before and extend several days into a menstrual period.
- Heavy Bleeding: Excessive bleeding during periods or bleeding between periods (menometrorrhagia).
- Pain with Intercourse/Bowel Movements: Pain during or after sex is common. Also pain with urination or bowel movements.
